Regions of France

We start in Poitou-Charentes – for no better (or other) reason than that the founder of this site has lived and travelled through that region for the last several years!

That's not to say that we do not intend to spread our wings. But as the Chinese philosopher was supposed to have said: "the thousand mile march starts with the first step". Our start, though, is somewhat more auspicious. The Region of Poitou-Charentes is very popular with thousands of British, Irish and other anglophone Nationals as a base for a principal home, a second home, a holiday home or an investment. Several low-cost airlines fly to a number of airports within and near its boundaries. It is just a few hours drive from the Normandy ports and ferry services to Britain and Ireland. The TGV train services from Paris to la Rochelle and Bordeaux traverse the region and there are direct connections to Eurostar services at Lille. There are through motorway connections to the Channel ports.

It's not a bad first step! The region divides into four administrative 'Départements' - pretty much the equivalent of counties in the UK. We have divided them into about 40 'Areas' which may - or may not - conform with the 'Pays' that are the local Administrative Districts. The larger towns and cities are given two or more pages reflecting different aspects of their character.
